Shri Saraswati Giti

Shri Saraswati Giti is a lyrical Sanskrit devotional song to the Goddess Saraswati, deity of speech and learning, drawn from the Kavya Tarangini. Built around a recurring refrain, it is the humble prayer of a devotee who longs for wisdom and eloquent speech, entreating the Goddess who dwells upon the white lotus to abide upon his tongue and grant him a place as her servant.

Salutations to Shri Ganesha. Come to my mouth, O Bharati, who dwells upon the radiant white hundred-petaled lotus; and at your feet, worshipped by the host of the immortals, grant me a place as your own servant.

O remover of the world's sins, O consort of Vishnu (the foe of Madhu), O Goddess whose dazzling white body surpasses the snow-mountain! Holding dear your lotus-feet hallowed by the whole host of the Vedas, on this earth there is nothing else worthy of worship. O Bharati, come to my mouth.

Alas, my life is exceedingly dull; bereft of sacred learning, it is not to be counted among men. O compassionate one, bestow your boundless grace, that my servitude may pass away. O Bharati, come to my mouth.

O dweller amid clusters of blossoming blue lotuses, O you who make your own servant the equal of Brihaspati! O Mother, O slender-waisted one, fashion everlasting mirth (joyful, graceful speech) upon my tongue. O Bharati, come to my mouth.

May my mind ceaselessly compose a song of your glorious deeds, meditated upon by Shiva and the foremost gods. O compassionate one, may your gracious glance fall upon me - what more should your child say? O Bharati, come to my mouth.

Thus ends the Shri Saraswati Giti.

Significance

The Shri Saraswati Giti is a lyrical devotional song addressed to the Goddess Saraswati, drawn from the Sanskrit Kavya Tarangini. Composed around a recurring refrain (dhruvam), it is set in the tender, melodic manner of a giti, in which the devotee prays to abide as a humble servant at the feet of the Goddess.

In sweet and graceful Sanskrit, the singer laments the barrenness of a life bereft of learning and entreats the Goddess - she who dwells upon the white lotus and removes the sins of the world - to place the ceaseless song of wisdom upon the tongue.
