पूर्वकाल में भगवान् विष्णु ने पूछा-

In ancient times, Lord Vishnu asked: "O Grandsire, God of gods! In which places and by which names do You dwell? Recall this and tell me."

ब्रह्माजी ने कहा-

Brahma said: I dwell - at Pushkar as Surashreshtha, at Gaya as Prapitamaha, at Kanyakubja as Vedagarbha, at Bhrigukaccha as Chaturmukha, at Kauberi as Srishtikarta, at Nandipuri as Brihaspati, at Prabhasa as Balarupi, at Varanasi as Surapriya, at Dvaravati as Chakradeva, at Vaidisha as Bhuvanadhipa, at Paundraka as Pundarikaksha, at Hastinapura as Pitaksha, at Jayanti as Vijaya, at Purushottama as Jayanta, at Vada as Padmahasta, at Tamolipta as Tamonuda, at Ahichchhatri as Janananda, at Kanchipuri as Janapriya, at Karnataka as Brahma, at Rishikunda as Muni, at Shrikantha as Shrinivasa, at Kamarupa as Shubhankara, at Uddiyana as Devakarta, at Jalandhara as Srashta, at Mallika as Vishnu, on Mount Mahendra as Bhargava, at Gomada as Sthavirakara, at Ujjayini as Pitamaha, at Kaushambi as Mahadeva, at Ayodhya as Raghava, at Chitrakuta as Virinchi, at Vindhyachala as Varaha, at Haridvara as Surashreshtha, on Mount Himavan as Shankara, at Dehika as Trachahasta, at Arbuda as Padmahasta, at Vrindavana as Padmanetra, at Naimisharanya as Kushahasta, at Gopakshetra as Govinda, on the Yamuna bank as Surendra, at Bhagirathi as Padmatanu, at Janasthala as Janananda, at Konkana as Madhvaksha, at Kampilya as Kanakaprabha, at Khetaka as Annadata, at Kratusthala as Shambhu, at Lanka as Paulastya, at Kashmira as Hamsavahana, at Arbuda as Vasishtha, at Utpalavana as Narada, at Medhaka as Shrutidata, at Prayaga as Yajushpati, at Shivalinga as Samaveda, at Markandasthana as Madhupriya, at Gomanta as Narayana, at Vidarbha as Dvijapriya, at Ankulaka as Brahmagarbha, at Brahmavaha as Sutapriya, at Indraprastha as Duradharsha, at Pampa as Sudarshana, at Viraja as Maharupa, at Rashtravardhana as Surupa, at Kadambaka as Janadhyaksha, at Samasthala as Devadhyaksha, at Rudrapitha as Gangadhara, at Supitha as Jalada, at Tryambaka as Tripurari, at Shrishaila as Trilochana, at Plakshapura as Mahadeva, at Kapala as Vedhanashana, at Shringaverapura as Shauri, at Nimishakshetra as Chakradharaka, at Nandipuri as Virupaksha, at Plakshapada as Gautama, at Hastinatha as Malyavan, at Vachika as Dvijendra, at Indrapuri as Divanatha, at Bhutika as Purandara, at Chandra as Hamsabahu, at Champa as Garudapriya, at Mahodaya as Mahayaksha, in the Putaka forest as Suyajna, at Siddheshvara as Shuklavarna, at Vibha as Padmabodhaka, in the Devadaru forest as Lingi, at Udaka as Umapati, at Matristhana as Vinayaka, at Alaka as Dhanadhipa, at Trikuta as Govinda, in Patala as Vasuki, at Kovidara as Yugadhyaksha, at Stri-rajya as Surapriya, at Purnagiri as Subhoga, at Shalmali as Takshaka, at Amara as Papaha, at Ambika as Sudarshana, at Navapi as Mahavira, at Kantara as Durganashana, at Padmavati as Padmagriha, and in the sky as Mrigalanchhana. O Madhusudana! Whoever praises me by these names at Prabhasa attains my abode and enjoys bliss; by reciting or hearing this hymn, all sins of mind, speech, and body are dispelled. The full-moon of Kartika joined with the Krittika nakshatra is a day most dear to me at Prabhasa; and if Rohini falls on that day, it is called the holy Mahakartiki, rare even for the gods. If the Kartika full-moon coincides with a Saturday, Sunday, or Thursday and the Krittika nakshatra, one who beholds the child-form of Brahma then gains the fruit of an Ashvamedha sacrifice. When the sun is in Vishakha and the moon in Krittika, that Padmaka-yoga is rare at Prabhasa; even a man laden with millions of sins, if he beholds the child-form of Brahma within the Prabhasa kshetra at that conjunction, need never behold the abode of Yama.

Significanceमहत्व

The Shri Brahma Ashtottar Namavali is a garland of one hundred and eight sacred names of Lord Brahma, the Creator and Grandsire of the worlds. Drawn from the Skanda Purana, each name recalls a form or attribute of the deity as he abides in different holy places, from Pushkar to Prabhasa.

Chanting these names one by one, each sealed with the salutation namah, is a complete act of devotion in itself. The practice is meant to fix the mind upon the qualities of the four-faced Lord and to offer him reverence through the power of his own names.

Benefits of Recitingपाठ के लाभ
  • Draws the mind toward Lord Brahma as Creator, teacher of the Vedas, and grandsire of all beings.
  • Serves as a devotional offering (archana) when the names are chanted with flowers or unbroken rice.
  • Is traditionally held to cleanse faults of thought, speech, and action when recited or heard with faith.
  • Cultivates steadiness, humility, and reverence through repeated remembrance of the sacred names.
  • Prepares the heart for deeper worship, mantra japa, or meditation upon the deity.
