Rudra (Mahadev) krit Shri Brahma Kavacham (From Padma Purana)

The Rudra-krit Brahma Kavacham, preserved in the Srishti Khanda of the Padma Purana, is a protective hymn in which Lord Shiva (Rudra), following Vishnu, bows before the lotus-born creator Brahma and hymns his sacred names. As an armour of prayer, it invokes Brahma's many names to guard the devotee limb by limb, seeking refuge at the feet of the primordial creator and release from the bondage of worldly existence.

After Narayana, Rudra, bowing low with devotion, praised Viranchi, Brahma the lotus-born.

Rudra said: Salutations, O lotus-eyed one; salutations to you, O lotus-born. Salutations, O guru of gods and demons, O creator, O Supreme Soul.

Salutations to you, O lord of all gods; salutations, O destroyer of delusion. Salutations to you who abide in the navel of Vishnu, born upon the lotus seat.

Salutations, O one whose limbs are red like coral, resplendent with hands soft as tender shoots. I have taken refuge in you; save me from the round of worldly existence.

O Pitamaha! At first your bud was shaped like a dark rain-cloud; then, beholding it again, I saw it red-faced, endowed with petals and filaments.

And the lotus with its countless petals, innumerable and stainless - seated upon it, by you this whole creation was set in motion.

Apart from you there is no other protection; O one adored by the world, salutations to you.

May Brahma protect my feet; may Kamalasana (the lotus-seated) protect my shanks. May Viranchi protect my waist, and Srishtikrit (the creator) my private parts.

May Padmanibha (the lotus-like) protect my navel; may Chaturanana (the four-faced) protect my belly. May Vishvasrik (creator of the universe) protect my chest, and Padmaja (the lotus-born) protect my heart.

May Savitripati (lord of Savitri) protect my throat; may Hrishikesha protect my face. May Padmavarna (the lotus-hued) protect my eyes, and Paramatma (the Supreme Soul) protect my head.

In this way, taking the name of Guru (Brahma), Lord Shankar prayed for the welfare of his entire body.

In the end, "Salutations to you, O Lord Brahma," he fell silent.

Thus ends the Brahma Kavacha spoken by Rudra, contained in the Padma Purana.

Significance

This is the Brahma Kavacham revealed by Rudra (Mahadev), preserved in the Srishti Khanda of the Padma Purana, in which Lord Shiva, following Vishnu, bows before the lotus-born creator Brahma and hymns him as Pitamaha, Kamalasana and Paramatma.

Being a kavach, it is a protective armour of prayer in which the many sacred names of Brahma are invoked to guard each limb of the devotee, from the feet to the crown of the head. Its spiritual purpose is deliverance from the bondage of worldly existence and refuge at the feet of the primordial creator.

Benefits of Reciting
  • Envelops the devotee in the protective grace of Brahma, the grandsire of all beings.
  • Invokes divine names to shield every part of the body, limb by limb, from harm.
  • Helps loosen the bonds of samsara and turns the mind toward liberation.
  • Cultivates humility and surrender, following the example of Rudra bowing to the creator.
  • Bestows steadiness, inner strength and a sure refuge in times of fear.
How to Recite

Recite the kavach with devotion after bathing, seated facing east before an image or thought-form of Lord Brahma, ideally at dawn. Read the verses attentively, dwelling on the placement of each divine name upon its corresponding limb as taught in the text.

Regular daily recitation, or reading it as part of Brahma worship, deepens its protective effect; conclude with salutations to the creator, as Rudra himself does.
