Devakrit Brahma Storam (From Skanda Purana)

The Brahma Stotram, from the Suta Samhita of the Skanda Purana, is a hymn of praise offered by the gods to Lord Brahma. the Devas salute Brahma as Hiranyagarbha, Prajapati, and Pitamaha, the four-faced creator and self-luminous witness who bestows the knowledge of the Absolute and carries devotees across the ocean of worldly existence.

Skanda Purana (स्कंद पुराण)

देवा ऊचुः ।

The Devas said:

ब्रह्मणे ब्रह्मविज्ञानदुग्धोदधि विधायिने । ब्रह्मतत्त्वदिदृक्षूणां ब्रह्मदाय नमो नमः ॥ १ ॥

Salutations again and again to Brahma, the maker of the ocean of milk that is the knowledge of Brahman, the giver of the Absolute knowledge to those who long to behold the truth of Brahman.

कष्टसंसारमग्नानां संसारोत्तारहेतवे । साक्षिणे सर्वभूतानां साक्षिहीनाय ते नमः ॥ २ ॥

Salutations to you, the cause of deliverance from samsara (to moksha) for those drowning in this painful cycle of existence, the witness of all beings, yet yourself without any witness.

सर्वधात्रे विधात्रे च सर्वद्वन्द्वापहारिणे । सर्वावस्थासु सर्वेषां साक्षिणे वै नमो नमः ॥ ३ ॥

Salutations again and again to the sustainer and creator of all, the remover of all pairs of opposites (duality), the witness of all beings in all their states.

परात्परविहीनाय पराय परमेष्ठिने । परिज्ञानवतामात्तस्वरूपाय नमो नमः ॥ ४ ॥

Salutations again and again to the Supreme (the Parameshthi), beyond whom there is none higher, whose true form is grasped by those endowed with complete knowledge.

पद्मजाय पवित्राय पद्मनाभसुताय च । पद्मपुष्पैः सुपूज्याय नमः पद्मधराय च ॥ ५ ॥

Salutations to the lotus-born, the pure one, the son of Padmanabha (Vishnu), the one worthy to be worshipped with lotus flowers, and the bearer of the lotus.

सुरज्येष्ठाय सूर्यादिदेवता तृप्तिकारिणे । सुरासुरनरादीनां सुखदाय नमो नमः ॥ ६ ॥

Salutations again and again to the eldest of the gods, who gives contentment to the deities beginning with Surya, the bestower of happiness upon gods, demons, humans, and all others.

वेधसे विश्वनेत्राय विशुद्धज्ञानरूपिणे । वेदवेद्याय वेदान्तनिधये वै नमो नमः ॥ ७ ॥

Salutations again and again to the creator (Vedha), the eye of the universe, the embodiment of pure knowledge, the one to be known through the Vedas, the treasure-store of Vedanta.

विधये विधिहीनाय विधिवाक्यविधायिने । विध्युक्त कर्मनिष्ठानां नमो विद्याप्रदायिने ॥ ८ ॥

Salutations to Vidhi (the ordainer), himself beyond all injunction, the framer of the words of command, the giver of knowledge to those steadfast in the duties enjoined by scripture.

विरिञ्चाय विशिष्टाय विशिष्टार्तिहराय च । विषण्णानां विषादाब्धिविनाशाय नमो नमः ॥ ९ ॥

Salutations again and again to Virinci (Brahma), the pre-eminent one, the remover of the afflictions of the noble, the destroyer of the ocean of despair for those sunk in dejection.

नमो हिरण्यगर्भाय हिरण्यगिरिवर्तिने । हिरण्यदानलभ्याय हिरण्यातिप्रियाय च ॥ १० ॥

Salutations to Hiranyagarbha, who dwells upon the golden mountain, who is attained through the gift of gold, and to whom gold is exceedingly dear.

शताननाय शान्ताय शङ्करज्ञानदायिने । शमादिसहितायैव ज्ञानदाय नमो नमः ॥ ११ ॥

Salutations again and again to the hundred-faced one, the tranquil, the giver of the knowledge of Shankara, endowed with calmness and the other virtues, the bestower of wisdom.

शम्भवे शम्भुभक्तानां शङ्कराय शरीरिणाम् । शाङ्करज्ञानहीनानां शत्रवे वै नमो नमः ॥ १२ ॥

Salutations again and again to him who is Shambhu (source of bliss) to the devotees of Shambhu, who is Shankara (bestower of welfare) to all embodied beings, and who is the foe of those bereft of the knowledge of Shankara.

नमः स्वयम्भुवे नित्यं स्वयं भूब्रह्मदायिने । स्वयं ब्रह्मस्वरूपाय स्वतन्त्राय परात्मने ॥ १३ ॥

Eternal salutations to the self-born Svayambhu, the giver of the self-existent Brahman, himself of the very nature of Brahman, the independent one, the Supreme Self.

द्रुहिणाय दुराचारनिरतस्य दुरात्मनः । दुःखदायान्यजन्तूनां आत्मदाय नमो नमः ॥ १४ ॥

Salutations again and again to Druhina (Brahma), who gives sorrow to the evil-souled one addicted to wicked conduct, yet bestows the Self upon all other creatures.

वन्द्यहीनाय वन्द्याय वरदाय परस्य च । वरिष्ठाय वरिष्ठानां चतुर्वक्त्राय वै नमः ॥ १५ ॥

Salutations to the one who has none above him to venerate, yet is himself worthy of veneration, the giver of boons even to the highest, the most excellent among the excellent, the four-faced one.

प्रजापतिसमाख्याय प्रजानां पतये नमः । प्राजापत्यविरक्तस्य नमः प्रज्ञाप्रदायिने ॥ १६ ॥

Salutations to the one renowned as Prajapati, the lord of all creatures; salutations to the giver of wisdom to him who has grown detached from the state of Prajapati (from the desire for progeny).

पितामहाय पित्रादिकल्पनारहिताय च । पिशुनागम्यदेहाय पेशलाय नमो नमः ॥ १७ ॥

Salutations again and again to the Grandsire, free from all notions such as 'father' and the rest, whose form is inaccessible to the wicked, the gracious one.

जगत्कर्त्रे जगद्गोप्त्रे जगद्धन्त्रे परात्मने । जगद्दृश्यविहीनाय चिन्मात्रज्योतिषे नमः ॥ १८ ॥

Salutations to the maker, protector, and destroyer of the world, the Supreme Self, free from the world as a perceived object, the light that is pure consciousness alone.

विश्वोत्तीर्णाय विश्वाय विश्वहीनाय साक्षिणे । स्वप्रकाशैकमानाय नमः पूर्णपरात्मने ॥ १९ ॥

Salutations to the one who transcends the universe, who is the universe itself, who is beyond the universe, the witness, whose sole measure is his own self-luminosity, the full and Supreme Self.

स्तुत्याय स्तुतिहीनाय स्तोत्ररूपाय तत्त्वतः । स्तोतृणामपि सर्वेषां सुखदाय नमो नमः ॥ २० ॥

Salutations again and again to the one worthy of praise, yet beyond all praise, who is in truth the very embodiment of hymns, and the giver of happiness to all who praise him.

इति स्कान्दपुराणे सूतसंहितायां देवकृत ब्रह्मस्तोत्रम् ।

Thus ends the Brahma Stotram composed by the Devas, in the Suta Samhita of the Skanda Purana.
