Narada Krit Shri Brahma Stuti (From Padma Purana)

The Narada krit Shri Brahma Stuti, from the Srishti Khanda of the Padma Purana, is a hymn in which the celestial sage Narada adores Lord Brahma as the thousand-headed cosmic Purusha, the source of the Vedas, sacrifice, the fourfold social order, and every being. Echoing the Purusha Sukta and the images of the banyan within its seed and the plantain and its leaves, it proclaims that the whole universe abides within its creator.

नारद उवाच -

Narada said:

सहस्त्रशीर्षापुरुषः सहस्राक्षः सहस्रपात् । सर्वव्यापी भुवः स्पर्शादध्यतिष्ठद् दशाङ्गुलम् ॥१॥

The Purusha has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, and a thousand feet. All-pervading, he envelops the earth on every side; pervading this small creation measured by ten fingers, he yet abides beyond it.

यद् भूतं यच्च वै भाव्यं सर्वमेव भवान्यतः । ततो विश्वमिदं तात त्वत्तो भूतं भविष्यति ॥ २ ॥

Whatever has been and whatever is yet to be - all this is verily You. Therefore, O father, this entire universe, all that has come to be and all that shall be, arises from You.

त्वत्तो यज्ञः सर्वहुतः पृषदाज्यं पशुर्द्विधा । ऋचस्त्वत्तोऽथ सामानि त्वत्त एवाभिजज्ञिरे ॥ ३ ॥

From You arose the all-offering sacrifice, the ghee mixed with curds, and animals of two kinds. From You came the Rig verses, and from You the Sama chants were born.

त्वत्तो यज्ञास्त्वजायन्त त्वत्तोऽश्वाश्चैव दन्तिनः । गावस्त्वत्तः समुद्भूताः त्वत्तो जाता वयोमृगाः ॥ ४ ॥

From You were born sacrifices, and horses too, and elephants. Cows arose from You, and from You were born the birds and beasts.

त्वन्मुखाद् ब्राह्मणा जातास्त्वत्तः क्षत्रमजायत । वैश्यास्तवोरुजाःशूद्रास्तव पद्भ्यां समुद्गताः ॥ ५ ॥

From Your mouth the Brahmanas were born; from You the Kshatriyas arose. The Vaishyas came from Your thighs, and the Shudras issued forth from Your feet.

अक्ष्णोः सूर्योऽनिलः श्रोत्राच्चन्द्रमा मनसस्तव । प्राणोऽन्तः सुषिराज्जातो मुखादग्निरजायत॥ ६॥

From Your eyes came the sun, from Your ears the wind, and from Your mind the moon. The vital breath arose from the hollow spaces within, and from Your mouth fire was born.

नाभितो गगनं दयौश्च शिरसः समवर्तत । दिशः श्रोत्रात् क्षितिः पद्भ्यां त्वत्तः सर्वमभूदिदम् ॥ ७ ॥

From Your navel came the sky, and from Your head the heavens took shape. The directions came from Your ears and the earth from Your feet; from You all this arose.

न्यग्रोधः सुमहानल्पे यथा बीजे व्यवस्थितः। ससर्ज विश्वमखिलं बीजभूते तथा त्वयि ॥ ८ ॥

As the mighty banyan tree lies contained within a tiny seed, so this entire universe abides within You, who are its very seed.

बीजाङ्कुरसमुद्भूतो न्यग्रोधः समुपस्थितः। विस्तारं च यथा याति त्वत्तः सृष्टौ तथा जगत् ॥ ९॥

As the banyan, sprouting from its seed, arises and spreads into vastness, so in Your creation this world expands forth from You.

यथा हि कदली नान्या त्वक्पत्रेभ्योऽभिदृश्यते । एवं विश्वमिदं नान्यत् त्वत्स्थमीश्वर दृश्यते ॥ १०॥

As the plantain tree is seen to be nothing apart from its bark and leaves, so, O Lord, this universe is seen to be nothing other than You, abiding within You.

ह्लादिनी त्वयि शक्तिः सा त्वय्येका सहभाविनी । ह्लादतापकरा मिश्रा त्वयि नो गुणवर्जिते ॥ ११ ॥

The blissful power (shakti) dwells in You, one and ever co-abiding with You. But the mixed power that brings both joy and torment does not abide in You, who are free from the qualities (gunas).

पृथग्भूतैकभूताय सर्वभूताय ते नमः । व्यक्तं प्रधानं पुरुषो विराट् सम्राट् तथा भवान्॥ १२॥

Salutations to You, who are at once manifold and one, and who are all beings. You are the Manifest, the Primordial Nature (pradhana), the Purusha, the Virat, and the Sovereign (Samrat).

सर्वस्मिन् सर्वभूतस्त्वं सर्वः सर्वस्वरूपधृक् । सर्वं त्वत्तः समुद्भूतं नमः सर्वात्मने ततः ॥ १३ ॥

In all things You abide as all beings; You are all, bearing the form of all. All has arisen from You; therefore, salutations to You, the Self of all.

सर्वात्मकोऽसि सर्वेश ! सर्वभूतस्थितो यतः । कथयामि ततः किं ते सर्वं वेत्सि हृदिस्थितम् ॥ १४॥

You are the Self of all, O Lord of all, for You abide within all beings. What, then, shall I tell You? You know all that dwells within the heart.

यो मे मनोरथो देवः सफलः स त्वया कृतः । तप्तं सुतप्तं सफलं यद् दृष्टोऽसि जगत्पते ॥ १५ ॥

O Lord, the desire of my heart You have brought to fruition. O Master of the world, my penance has been well performed and made fruitful, for now I have beheld You.

श्री पाद्मे पुराणे सृष्टिखण्डे नारदकृत ब्रह्म स्तुति: सम्पूर्णा ॥

Thus ends the Brahma Stuti composed by Narada, in the Srishti Khanda (the section on creation) of the sacred Padma Purana.
