Shri Gayatri Stotram (From Devi Bhagvata Purana)

The Shri Gayatri Stotram from the Devi Bhagavata Puranais a hymn imparted by Bhagavan Narayana to the sage Narada in praise of the Goddess Sandhya-Gayatri, the primordial Adi Shakti and Mother of the worlds. It extols her as the power pervading all creation - the sacred rivers, the subtle channels of the body, and every plane of existence - and promises purification, spiritual attainment and liberation to those who recite it at the twilight worship.

नारद उवाच । भक्तानुकम्पिन् सर्वज्ञ हृदयं पापनाशनम् । गायत्र्याः कथितं तस्माद्गायत्र्याः स्तोत्रमीरय ॥ १ ॥

Narada said: O you who are compassionate to devotees, O all-knowing one, the sin-destroying heart (essence) of Gayatri has been recounted; therefore now declare the hymn of Gayatri.

श्रीनारायण उवाच ।

Shri Narayana said:

आदिशक्ते जगन्मातर्भक्तानुग्रहकारिणि । सर्वत्र व्यापिकेऽनन्ते श्रीसन्ध्ये ते नामोऽस्तु ते ॥ २ ॥

O Adi Shakti, O Mother of the worlds, O bestower of grace upon devotees, O all-pervading and infinite one, O revered Sandhya, salutations to you, salutations to you.

त्वमेव सन्ध्या गायत्री सावित्री च सरस्वती ।ब्राह्मी च वैष्णवी रौद्री रक्ता श्वेता सितेतरा ॥ ३ ॥

You alone are Sandhya, Gayatri, Savitri and Saraswati; Brahmi and Vaishnavi and Raudri; the red, the white, and the dark.

प्रातर्बाला च मध्याह्ने यौवनस्था भवेत्पुनः । वृद्धा सायं भगवती चिन्त्यते मुनिभिः सदा ॥ ४ ॥

At dawn a child, at midday again abiding in youth, and at dusk aged - thus is the Bhagavati ever contemplated by the sages.

हंसस्था गरुडारूढा तथा वृषभवाहनी । ऋग्वेदाध्यायिनी भूमौ दृश्यते या तपस्विभिः ॥ ५ ॥

Seated upon the swan, mounted upon Garuda, and borne by the bull - reciting the Rigveda, she is seen upon the earth by the ascetics.

यजुर्वेदं पठन्ती च अन्तरिक्षे विराजते । सा सामगापि सर्वेषु भ्राम्यमाणा तथा भुवि ॥ ६ ॥

Reciting the Yajurveda she shines resplendent in the mid-air; and as the chanter of the Samaveda she wanders among all, and likewise upon the earth.

रुद्रलोकं गता त्वं हि विष्णुलोकनिवासिनी । त्वमेव ब्राह्मणो लोकेऽमर्त्यानुग्रहकारिणी ॥ ७ ॥

You indeed have gone to the world of Rudra and you dwell in the world of Vishnu; you alone, in the world of Brahma, bestow grace upon the immortals.

सप्तर्षिप्रीतिजननी माया बहुवरप्रदा । शिवयोः करनेत्रोत्था ह्यश्रुस्वेदसमुद्भवा ॥ ८ ॥

The bringer of delight to the Seven Rishis, Maya, the granter of many boons; arisen from the hand and eye of the divine couple, born of their tears and sweat.

आनन्दजननी दुर्गा दशधा परिपठ्यते । वरेण्या वरदा चैव वरिष्ठा वरवर्णिनी ॥ ९ ॥

The bringer of bliss, Durga, is celebrated in tenfold forms: the most adorable, the giver of boons, the most excellent, the one of fairest hue,

गरिष्ठा च वरार्हा च वरारोहा च सप्तमी । नीलगङ्गा तथा सन्ध्या सर्वदा भोगमोक्षदा ॥ १० ॥

the most venerable, the worthy of boons, and - as the seventh - the graceful of form; and the blue Ganga, and Sandhya, ever the bestower of enjoyment and liberation.

भागीरथी मर्त्यलोके पाताले भोगवत्यपि । त्रिलोकवाहिनी देवी स्थानत्रयनिवासिनी ॥ ११ ॥

She is Bhagirathi in the world of mortals and Bhogavati in the nether world; the Goddess who flows through the three worlds, dwelling in all three regions.

भूर्लोकस्था त्वमेवाऽसि धरित्री लोकधारिणी । भुवो लोके वायुशक्तिः स्वर्लोके तेजसां निधिः ॥१२॥

Abiding in Bhuloka you are the Earth herself, the upholder of the world; in Bhuvarloka you are the power of the wind, and in Svarloka the treasure-store of all splendour.

महर्लोके महासिद्धिर्जनलोके जनेत्यपि । तपस्विनी तपोलोके सत्यलोके तु सत्यवाक् ॥ १३ ॥

In Maharloka she is the great perfection, and in Janaloka she is named Jana as well; in Tapoloka the ascetic, and in Satyaloka the utterer of truth (Satyavak).

कमला विष्णुलोके च गायत्री ब्रह्मलोकदा । रुद्रलोके स्थिता गौरी हरार्धाङ्गनिवासिनी ॥ १४ ॥

In Vishnuloka she is Kamala, and as Gayatri she bestows the world of Brahma; in Rudraloka she abides as Gauri, dwelling in the half of Hara's body.

अहमो महतश्चैव प्रकृतिस्त्वं हि गीयसे । साम्यवस्थात्मिका त्वं हि शबलब्रह्मरूपिणी ॥ १५ ॥

You indeed are sung as Prakriti, the source of ahamkara and of the great principle (mahat); you are the very embodiment of the state of equilibrium, and the form of the qualified Brahman.

ततः पराऽपराशक्ति परमा त्वं हि गीयसे । इच्छाशक्तिः क्रियाशक्तिर्ज्ञानशक्तिस्त्रिशक्तिदा ॥ १६ ॥

Beyond that, O power both transcendent and immanent, you are sung as the Supreme; the power of will, the power of action, and the power of knowledge - the bestower of the three powers.

गङ्गा च यमुना चैव विपाशा च सरस्वती । सुरयूर्देविका सिन्धुर्नर्मदेरावती तथा ॥ १७ ॥

Ganga and Yamuna, and Vipasha and Saraswati; Sarayu, Devika, Sindhu, Narmada and Iravati as well.

गोदावरी शतद्रूश्च कावेरी देवलोकगा । कौशिकी चन्द्रभागा च वितस्ता च सरस्वती ॥ १८ ॥

Godavari and Shatadru, and Kaveri that flows to the world of the gods; Kaushiki and Chandrabhaga, and Vitasta and Saraswati.

गण्डकी तापिनी तोया गोमती वेत्रवत्यपि । इडा च पिङ्गला चैव सुषुम्ना च तृतीयका ॥ १९ ॥

Gandaki, Tapini, Toya, Gomati and Vetravati too; and Ida and Pingala, and Sushumna the third.

गान्धारी हस्तिजिह्वा च पूषापूषा तथैव च । अलम्बुसा कुहूश्चैव शङ्खिनी प्राणवाहिनी ॥ २० ॥

Gandhari and Hastijihva, and Pusha and Apusha likewise; Alambusa and Kuhu, Shankhini, and the bearer of the vital breath.

नाडी च त्वं शरीरस्था गीयसे प्राक्तनैर्बुधैः । हृत्पद्मस्था प्राणशक्तिः कण्ठस्था स्वप्ननायिका ॥ २१ ॥

And you are sung by the sages of old as the channel (nadi) that dwells within the body; seated in the lotus of the heart you are the power of the vital breath, and seated in the throat you are the mistress of dream.

तालुस्था त्वं सदाधारा बिन्दुस्था बिन्दुमालिनी । मूले तु कुण्डली शक्तिर्व्यापिनी केशमूलगा ॥ २२ ॥

Seated in the palate you are the ever-abiding support, seated in the bindu you are Bindumalini; at the root you are the coiled power, Kundalini, and pervading all, you extend to the very root of the hair.

शिखामध्यासना त्वं हि शिखाग्रे तु मनोन्मनी । किमन्यद्बहुनोक्तेन यत्किञ्चिज्जगतीत्रये ॥ २३ ॥

Seated in the midst of the crown you are, and at its summit you are Manonmani; what more need be said at length - whatever there is in the three worlds,

तत्सर्वं त्वं महादेवि श्रिये सन्ध्ये नमोऽस्तु ते। इतीदं कीर्तितं स्तोत्रं सन्ध्यायां बहुपुण्यदम् ॥ २४ ॥

all that are you, O Mahadevi; O auspicious Sandhya, salutations to you. Thus has this hymn been proclaimed, which at the twilight worship bestows abundant merit,

महापापप्रशमनं महासिद्धिविधायकम् । य इदं कीर्तयेत् स्तोत्रं सन्ध्याकाले समाहितः ॥ २५ ॥

It quells the gravest sins and confers the great perfections. Whoever recites this hymn at the hour of twilight with a composed mind,

अपुत्रः प्राप्नुयात् पुत्रं धनार्थी धनमाप्नुयात् । सर्वतीर्थतपोदानयज्ञयोगफलं लभेत् ॥ २६ ॥

the sonless obtains a son, and the seeker of wealth obtains wealth; he gains the fruit of all pilgrimages, austerities, charities, sacrifices and yoga.

भोगान् भुङ्क्त्वा चिरं कालमन्ते मोक्षमवाप्नुयात् । तपस्विभिः कृतं स्तोत्रं स्नानकाले तु यः पठेत् ॥ २७ ॥

having enjoyed pleasures for a long span, in the end he attains liberation. And whoever recites this hymn, composed by the ascetics, at the time of bathing -

यत्र कुत्र जले मग्नः सन्ध्यामज्जनजं फलम् । लभते नात्र सन्देहः सत्यं सत्यं च नारद ॥ २८ ॥

immersed in water anywhere, he obtains the fruit of the sacred twilight ablution; herein there is no doubt - it is true, truly true, O Narada.

शृणुयाद्योपि तद्भक्त्या स तु पापात्प्रमुच्यते । पीयूषसदृशं वाक्यं सन्ध्योक्तं नारदेरितम् ॥ २९ ॥

Whoever even listens to it with devotion is freed from sin. This nectar-like discourse concerning Sandhya was spoken to Narada.

इति श्रीमद्देवीभागवते महापुराणे द्वादशस्कन्धे गायत्रीस्तोत्रं नाम पञ्चमोऽध्यायः ॥

Thus ends the fifth chapter, called the Gayatri Stotram, in the twelfth Skandha of the venerable Devi Bhagavata Mahapurana.
