Shri Brahma Stotram

A devotional hymn of salutation to Lord Brahma as the eternal, non-dual Supreme - the self-luminous cause, refuge and sustainer of all the worlds. In seven verses it adores the Creator as Existence (sat) and Consciousness (cit), the bestower of liberation, and the One who is mother, father, kinsman and friend to the devotee.

Salutations to You, the Existence (sat), the cause of the universe; salutations to You, the Consciousness (cit), the refuge of all the worlds. Salutations to the non-dual Reality, the bestower of liberation; salutations to Brahman, the all-pervading and eternal.

You alone are the refuge, You alone the most adorable, You alone the protector of the world, self-luminous. You alone are the world's creator, sustainer and destroyer; You alone are the Supreme - immovable and free of all differentiation (nirvikalpa).

You are the fear of fears, the terror of terrors, the goal of all living beings, the purifier of purifiers. You alone are the controller of the most exalted stations, the Supreme beyond all others, the protection of protectors.

We remember You, we worship You, we bow to You - the witness-form of the universe. We take refuge in the one eternal treasure, the supportless Lord, the very boat that carries us across the ocean of worldly existence.

He has no master in the world, no ruler, nor any mark by which He may be known. He is the (first) cause, the lord of the lords of the senses; He has no progenitor, and no one is lord over Him.

We know Him - the supreme great Lord of lords, the supreme deity of deities, the master of masters. Him, the transcendent, the adorable Lord of the worlds, worthy of all worship.

You alone are my mother, and You alone my father; You alone are my kinsman, and You alone my friend. You alone are my knowledge, and You alone my wealth; You alone are my everything, O God of gods.

Significance

This Shri Brahma Stotram is a devotional hymn of salutation to Brahma, the eternal, all-pervading and self-luminous Supreme, praised here as the sole cause, refuge and sustainer of the worlds.

Its verses honour Brahma as the non-dual Truth beyond change and imagination, the greatest of lords and the God of gods, who is at once mother, father, kinsman, friend, knowledge and wealth to the devotee.

Compact yet profound, it distils the essence of praise offered to the Creator as the innermost reality of all.
